Kite-flying season is upon us, so what better time to enjoy this small piece of pop culture nostalgia from 1939. Mickey and Donald demonstrate why caution is needed when flying kites near utility poles and electric wires. It was likely that the poster was made available nationally and local power companies put their own brands in the bottom margin. The Duquesne Light Company is based out of Pittsburgh and continues to serve the southwestern Pennsylvania area to this day. As a Pittsburgh native, I have to wonder if my parents and their siblings may have at some point seen this poster and taken its advice to heart.

ReplyDeleteThey was also an eight page promotional comic called "Donald Duck Talks About Kites" by Carl Barks. In it Donald talks about kite safety to his nephews and how to make kites.
